On Cancer & the Resilience of Trees
So all day, I’ve been gathering samples. Samples of my writing, of my speech, my singing, trying to find the best representations of my “voice.” In my looking, I found an passionate plea that I posted on Facebook to get folks involved in the West Louisville Relay Life. I wrote this post on March 24, 2009 and closed it with the prose poem, “Four Skinny Trees,” by...

Dissertation Abstract - That Terrifying Center:...
Hey folks,  Since I get a lot of requests from folks about my dissertation work—fewer now than when I was working on it and homicidal, it seems—I figured I’d just post my abstract (summary of the whole project in a few paragraphs) here. Also because actually watching your eyes glaze over once I start to explain can be a bit unnerving, reading the abstract from here will allow...

Honey, the culture of the Cabbage Patch is some kinda creepy when you get a couple decades of perspective to chew on. I’m just saying.  On a listing for a CPK that is very much like one I had—that my auntie gave to me—the listing talks about the doll being naked, and her panties being sold separately… Is anyone else uncomfortable with the idea of dolls (or funny looking...

Because I still need the reminder that beauty isn’t a feeling, I wrote “Natural Beauty.” It’s for my mama, and my nieces, and my sisters and brothers. We all need to remember that our loveliness isn’t based on how we think we look. We are lovely and valuable because we are. Take good care, y’all. JD (whose mama insisted that she was a natural beauty…)
